Great organization that helps people that really need it
I was kicked out for insisting that my door be locked at all times. as I have been to DV Shelters before to have my things stolen by staff as well as roommates, its a problem many dv shelters face that they do not create buildings with private rooms for each guest. this is a problem when there are recovering addicts who like to steal things. its also a violation of privacy of human rights. I was working on photography and singing projects, both of which I do for work. my roomate flipped out yelling at me for a while, which I ignored. I later went out of my room to eat, after my roomate left as I felt unsafe leaving my things with her in the room. she then started yelling at me in the common area. My Roomate, a white female, had a friend donate a ton of money to the organization, so I guess she figured she could just be a brat and verbally abuse me repeatedly. the advocate kicked me out in the rain after dark in a town I didnt know rather than hearing out the entire conversation or resolving conflict. women who go to a dv shelter need sanctuary, and healing. there are many things I think were really great about this organization, but this shelter needs to be redesigned to support safe space for all the guests. women need to know its ok to have privacy, have a key and be able to know that all their things are safe and not get kicked out after dark in a city they dont know in the rain. regardless of what happens that is not safe for anyone. when my taxi arrived as I had money sent to me by a friend the woman who gave me a ride mentioned that she too had been kicked out at night because courage connection gave her an ultimatium go to groups or get kicked out. she however had to work. so courage connection kicked the woman out with her kids.as community and people who want to assist those who are affected by DV, I highly recommend insisting on change prior to a donation.

The staff is rude and condescending continuously looking for fault and threatens to put you back out in the street. I became Ill after 2 months largely from the stress.,Having labored breathing with bronchitis doing a chore, cleaning the TV room a staff member stood over me saying" you missed here and you missed this spot", I explained the vacuum was broke and I was breathing heavy and couldn't finish the chore. She said I was disrespectful and she wrote me up for not finishing. IT WAS HORRIBLE!! All The black residents were told not to worry about vacuuming until the vacuum is repaired. I was assaulted by a resident who was obviously drunk, and yet the manager blamed the situation on me! The resident and manager involved are of the same race, it was so obvious what was going on.
I want the staff members at the Center For Women in transition who worked there, when I lived there, to know I don't have any respect for you. You treated me awful, you are rude condescending and prejudice. You're all so unprofessional that you could care less about my nightmare experience or anybody else's. A 6 months nightmare and setback. Every staff member involved should be reprimanded and trained on how to be professionals.
Complaints from many white residents have been reported but overlooked and disregarded. I did file a grievance with the administrator before I moved. Not surprised, I didn't receive a response! {wonder if the complaint filed even made the record?}
. At this time 01/31/2016 I have successfully maintained independance with housing and income since 07/2014. I live in an area where we love and respect one another, color not an issue or problem here!
I'm content and doing much better but still have serious health issues.
My personal experience and most white residents living there at the time had the same bad experiences. . I was terrorized and received no help or assistance. The 6 months of terror, seriously DELAYED MY progress to improve my life and be independant.
I lived at this facility for 6 months from 08/2013 until 01/15/2014. It was an absolute nightmare. Even today I cringe to think of it. . To white ladies take my advice, if you are ever in an abusive or homeless situation, ask for support services from the domestic or homeless shelters in Champaign, Urbana as the LAST RESORT. I do believe at least they will manage to get you an order of protection if you are persistent.
