Subsequent attempts to contact the manager to complain were fruitless. I left a message through the corporate call center, on the manager's "personal cell phone" (phone number listed in the store), and with an employee of the store. I never received any response.
That's the last straw. Every time I deal with this company, I get treated like crap this way. I found a local company that would only be too happy to do the work. Never using this (or any other) U-Haul again.
I called the company to schedule the appointment myself. The first time I was told that "that guy was busy" and he'd call me back, which never happened. The second time I got a helpful person who happily scheduled my appointment for the next week.
This place is the worst-run business I have ever seen. I made an appointment to have a trailer hitch installed on my car and was told that it would take 2 -> 3 hours to be completed. That appointment was confirmed before I brought the car in. I dropped it off at 7 am and was the first customer in the door to get the paperwork done. Ten hours later, I returned after work to find my car sitting in the exact same spot without a hitch.
When you make your Uhaul reservation they ask you to choose a pick up location and time. There is some fine print that says “all reservations are subject to availability” but most people take that to mean that it’s possible they won’t be able to make a reservation for the equipment they want. So once the reservation is processed, it is assumed that there is no longer a risk of NOT getting that equipment. There is an on-line check-in option, further implying that you will be able to show up at the specified location at the specified time and drive away in your truck. However, I called to confirm my reservation and I was told that I would receive a phone call the night before my pick up time telling me when and where to get the truck. After pressing the issue, I discovered that I would likely be required to drive to another city (50 or 60 miles) to pick up my truck, but that I wouldn’t even know where until the night before. So basically, UHaul waits until you’re within the 24-hour no free cancellation window to spring on you that you have to drive 60 miles one-way to pick up your truck. Your other option is to cancel your reservation, pay the late cancellation fee, and then scramble to find another truck in less than 24 hours. This also allows UHaul to avoid the expense of moving trucks to other locations and instead transfers that burden, and the associated mileage fees, to the customer. If you protest, you are told that you should have read the contract before making your reservation. I just thought people should know about this so they can avoid this. Also every person I've ever talked to at Uhaul has been SUPER RUDE to me.
I showed up this morning to get the hitch installed and (after being told by a snarky guy that I'd parked in the wrong place and I needed to move my car) was told that their "trailer hitch install guy wasn't in today" and I'd have to reschedule. No apology (or even politeness), just an excuse that "I scheduled with corporate, not with them."
As usual, U-Haul disappoints. I made an appointment for trailer hitch installation online which said that someone would call me to schedule the appointment. No one called...

I later discovered that the employee who installed trailer hitches for them had quit a few weeks earlier -- before I even made my appointment! They apparently believed that the Magic Trailer Hitch Fairy was going to visit and put the hitch on.
This business must operate on the premise that the local University's students are, basically, forced to use this place.
I wouldn't give this place a single star, except I have to in order to post the review.
